Budgies are commonly known as parakeets but the word parakeet really means a long tailed bird such the budgie, conure , indian ring neck and quaker and the list go's on. Budgies are wonderful little clowns with a ton of personality, that and they can talk! One was recorded to speak more then 1700 words! The Budgie is often easily hand tamed and can become a loving little friend to a patient owner. Budgies need to have a social life and cant be in isolation. Budgies housed together can be friendly if given enough contact, though a lone parakeet is often the best choice if you want a “pet-quality” bird. I recommend a hand fed baby or a English Budgie.
Budgies can live between 7 to 15 years, some even 20. Sadly it seems that this little bird is often seen as a “throw away” pet because it’s inexpensive. Most budgies are ground-feeders that eat primarily seeds and plant material. Try to incorporate seeds with healthy pellets, fruits and vegetables and minerals. Sexing a budgie is simple as long as it is six to eight months of age, when they mature. The adult male’s cere (the flesh above the beak) is generally blue, while the hen’s is white/blue or brown. Young males will generally have a pink/purple cere, a young female will have a blue cere with white rings around her nostrils.

A budgie should have a minimum cage size of 18- by 18- by 18-inches for a single bird. This cage size is fine if your budgie is outside of the cage most of the time, but if you have a cage-confined budgie, it's going to be much too small to keep your bird happy and healthy. For two budgies, 39- by 20- by 32-inches is a recommended size. The bars of the cage should be horizontal and spaced no more than 1/2-inch apart. Toys will also ensure that your little buddy is enjoying his life.
