Finches are one of the most easy pet birds to get and properly take care of.
Their excellent for new bird owners or for those who enjoy watching them go about their everyday life. Finches in most cases could care less about human contact and need to have company from their own kind they are known as social birds. But that does not mean taming and training your pet finch is out of the question, many finch owners have trained their pet to peacefully fly to their hands and perch there. Also I have heard of some hand fed finches enjoying head scratches. On that subject if you are wanting a already tamed bird a handfed finch is the best way to go, although a rare find. Hand feeding finches is a very tedious job and can result in death for the chick if not done right, you should never try to without first being trained. There are many types of finches, there is the popular Society finch to the beautiful Gouldian finch, most finches come in different color mutations. They are quiet for the most part but make a peaceful cheeping, males are louder then females.

In nature, finches mainly eat seeds. Of course that doesn't mean they can just thrive on seeds. Finches also need a wide variety of other foods in the wild like, fruits, and insects. As the caretaker you will need to provide them with seeds, pellets, fruits and vegetables and a cuttle bone. Also spray millet is a bird favorite.Cage size is very important for your pet to be healthy and happy, in general you should get the largest cage you can. 30 inches long, by 18 inches high and 18 inches wide is a good sized cage for two zebra finches. If you are going to get more then that, you'll need an aviary or flight cage. The bars should be 1/4 inch to 1/2. It also depends on the type of finch, remember to always look for info on the specific type of finch you are getting. Finches need to have a clear path to fly back and forth in their cage, you can also give them non toxic plants, they can have toys but generally they aren't interested in them.
